Adwords advertising can be a tough business to start in, but it can also be one of the most rewarding. Successful Adwords campaigns have several elements to them, one of which we'll cover in this article. Namely, if you want a successful Adwords campaign, you must be aware of what your competition is doing.
Analyzing your adwords competition is not as difficult as you might think. It differs slightly depending on whether you are selling your own product or you are promoting an affiliate product, but not by much.
First you must decide on what keywords you will be targeting for your adwords campaign. This is a critical step, as the keywords are probably the single most important factor in an adwords campaign. Once you have decided which keywords you will be targeting, it is time to start analyzing your competition.
This is a time consuming process, but I believe that it is critical to understanding your market and the performance of your adwords campaigns. Type each of your keywords into Google and look at the Adwords advertisements that appear on the top and left of your screen. The first thing to note is how many advertisers are targeting that particular keyword. If there are a lot of advertisers, then it is a very popular keyword and may be tough to craft a profitable adwords campaign around. This is not a given, though, as you also must pay attention to the ads themselves. Are they well crafted and highly targeted? If not, then you have an opportunity.
If there are just a few advertisers, then you want to make sure that there will be enough traffic for this keyword to warrant paying for clicks on an adwords campaign. Your process for selecting keywords should have addressed this already, so you are probably staring at a prime opportunity. Repeat this process for each of keywords, keeping track of which seem like a good opportunity and trashing the ones that are not.
The next step is to monitor the longevity of the adwords advertisements. If a particular advertiser continues to run the same advertisement for more than 7 days, then it is very likely that it is a profitable adwords campaign. This is a good thing, as it also means that there is an opportunity for you to make a profit on a similar adwords campaign. Competition is not always a bad thing! In fact, without any competition you will find it extremely difficult to gauge the potential profitability of any adwords campaign. Fortunately, this will be a very rare circumstance.
As with any aspect of running a business, it is important to consider your competition when crafting an adwords campaign. The presence of competition can be a good thing, provided it's not too heavy. A complete lack of competition on any keyword should be considered a warning sign that it is not profitable for an adwords campaign.
